Background and aspirations for ASAHP

I am the current Dean of the School of Health Professions at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and bring a wealth of experience and a clear vision to the Association of Schools Advancing Health Professions (ASAHP). My background as a researcher, educator, and leader positions me perfectly to champion ASAHP's mission of advancing health professions education.

My career path demonstrates a deep commitment to excellence across all facets of health professions. My prior roles as Chair of the Department of Physical Therapy and Associate Dean for Research at Georgia State University showcase my ability to drive positive change. There, I spearheaded initiatives that improved research productivity, student success rates, and faculty development. These experiences highlight my dedication to not only my own field but to the holistic growth of health professions education.

My academic credentials further solidify my leadership potential. Holding a doctorate in applied physiology, a Master's degree in physical therapy, and an MBA demonstrates a unique blend of scientific expertise, clinical knowledge, and business acumen. This multifaceted perspective is invaluable in navigating the complex landscape of contemporary healthcare education.

My research contributions further underscore my commitment to advancing the field. As a published scholar in neuroplasticity and stroke recovery, I stand at the forefront of scientific discovery in physical therapy. My experience securing grants from prestigious institutions like the National Institutes of Health and the Veterans Health Administration showcases my ability to translate research into tangible benefits for patients.

My dedication extends beyond my own institution. My active participation in national organizations like ASAHP, The Consortium of Research Intensive Schools of Health Professions (CRISHP), and the Alpha Eta Society reflects my commitment to collaborative leadership. My current role as a board member for ASAHP and past treasurer for the Alpha Eta Society demonstrates a long-standing desire to contribute to the betterment of health professions education on a national scale. Furthermore, my service on review panels for esteemed organizations like the National Institutes of Health underscores my dedication to upholding the highest standards in research and education.

My aspirations for ASAHP are clear: to elevate health professions education through interprofessional collaboration, leadership, excellence, and innovation. My background as a researcher, educator, and leader positions me perfectly to champion this vision. With my proven track record of success and collaborative spirit, I am poised to make a significant contribution to the future of ASAHP and, by extension, the future of health professions education.
