How long have you been in your position? 20 years
What’s the value of education in the health professions? The value is not just job security, but to be a part of a great tradition of caring and healing.
What is the value of ASAHP? The networking opportunities and the collegial and personal relationships that are developed; the opportunities for growth in leadership and practice.
Why did the health professions interest you and how did you get started? I grew up in a household of professionals: my father was a music teacher and my mother was a nurse. From an early age, the emphasis was on helping others and caring for those who were less fortunate.
What are you looking forward to during your ASAHP board tenure? The continued membership growth and expanding its influence in health care; to be the go-to organization for up-to-date research.
Your philosophy on education in 6 words: The tassel is worth the hassle.
Before I retire I want to: Travel a bit more, especially to Asia and prepare a smooth transition of leadership
In college, I was known for: The little guy with the big voice. I had a deep bass voice
My favorite trip was: Out of so many international trips I’ve taken through the years, I’d have to say our 2019 holiday to Dublin, Ireland. That’s where George Frederick Handel debuted Messiah. We went to Even Song at Christ Church and St Patrick’s Cathedrals. It was a week of simple pleasure instead of a side trip from work trips.
4 people I’d take to coffee or have a glass of wine with: Frederick Douglass, Sigmund Freud, Sidney Poitier, Thurgood Marshall
The best advice I ever received was: Always leave your opponent an exit in a conflict. That allows her/him a way to preserve their dignity.
My hobby is: Exercise, traveling, reading, music
My passion is: Music
Only my friends know: My childhood nickname
My favorite saying is: “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take but by the number of moments that take our breath away.”
