The Senate Appropriations Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies (LHHS) Subcommittee held a hearing on the “President’s Fiscal Year 2023 Budget Request for the United States Department of Education” with Secretary Miguel Cardona. School safety, learning loss, mental health access, and student loans were major areas of discussion.
Subcommittee Ranking Member Roy Blunt (R-MO) shared concerns during his opening statement and Q&A about the Department’s plans for student loan forgiveness and servicers. Democrats asked about when the Department would end the student loan moratorium and what accountability measures would be set for new student loan servicers.
Sens. Reed, Braun, and Baldwin expressed support for adult education and career and technical education but were concerned whether there is enough emphasis and funding to meet the demand. Sen. Schatz asked how the Department plans to integrate and expand Second Chance Pell.
