STATE HIGHER EDUCATION FUNDING STILL LAGS CONSIDERABLY BEHIND PRE-RECESSION LEVELS

A report issued today by the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities finds total funding for public two- and four-year colleges is $8.7 billion below what it was prior to the recession, when adjusted for inflation.

The vast majority of states – with the exception of Montana, North Dakota, Wisconsin and Wyoming – are spending less per student this school year than they did before the recession. Most states still made some improvements, though. Thirty-eight states increased per student funding in the last year, making for an increase of $275 per student nationally.
