DELAY SOUGHT IN RELEASE OF HOSPITAL QUALITY STAR RATINGS

A bipartisan group of 60 U.S. senators on April 11 requested the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to delay the April 21 release of the overall hospital quality star ratings because they believe that more time is needed to examine the star rating methodology more closely, analyze its impact on different types of hospitals, and provide more transparent information about calculation of the ratings to determine accuracy.  A concern is that the current Star Ratings system may not accurately take into account hospitals that treat patients with low socioeconomic status or multiple complex chronic conditions. A similar effort is underway in the House where signatures for a letter are being collected.
